Ruspoli Castle

TraveLoving explores a magical expanse of renaissance ruins and papal palaces run by meditating princesses and wine-growing poets”

Castello Ruspoli is situated in the medieval town of Vignanello, 70 km from Rome and a mere 18km away from Viterbo, the second largest city in the region of Lazio. Surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and Italy’s largest producers of hazel nuts, the region known as Tuscia, offers extensive range of organic products. The Ruspoli Castle has belonged to the same family since 1500. To this day the descendants continue to take care of it with great love and passion. Thus the guests of the castle will have the unique opportunity not only to live in the Castle but also to experience the way of life and the traditional hospitality of its owners.

A perfect Renaissance Garden

The design of the magnificent Renaissance garden is attributed to Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, one of the greatest architectural theorists of the 16th century, and was built in 1611 at the behest of Ottavia Orsini, daughter of Pier Francesco, known as Vicino, who years earlier had had the Monster Park of Bomarzo built not far from Vignanello.

The part in front of the castle is divided into 12 parts bordered by four avenues along which one can stroll among the laurel, box, myrtle and viburnum hedges. In the centre of the composition is a large fountain with water features. Other small Italian gardens wind their way through the terraces sloping down towards the forest in the valley. The garden still retains the rigour of the initial design, which is renewed every year in fine weather.

The Rooms

Located on the second floor of the Castle and decorated by Verde Visconti they all have the best view of the Renaissance Garden. In the apartment there are four bedrooms with bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. It is ideal for a small group or family that wants to spend a few days in a castle and wants to explore its magnificent surroundings. The apartment is separate from the activities organized by the ownersIn addition to the 4-room apartment, there are also one suite located on the main floor of the castle.
